When I made cuts for my Freshman team, I looked at who had potential to be coached. It came down to willingness to learn, and also coordination.
I preferred players that wanted to learn everything, not just spiking.
A player has to be able to put the ball where they intend to put it. If they serve, it better go over the net in the vicinity of their target 8/10.
Coaches hate players that make a lot of errors trying to do something too fantastic.
Good passing is the key to everything. It takes quick feet to get behind the ball to face your target.
Setting takes some time to master.
If you can block without getting in the net, that's good.
If you can spike the ball that's great. But, most people do not hit the ball with all of their potential. They usually are dropping their hand and they take too early of an approach.
Desire and being coachable can go a long way.
Watch youtube videos on how to perform the basics and practice against a wall. Or learn how to pepper and practice with someone else that wants to tryout.

Well I don't know how much experience you have so let's start from the beginning. You probably won't have to know any drills because they will explain them to you. But you should definitely learn the terms like 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 32s, etc. (those are all things you call for a set depending on where on the court you are hitting from). Also know that an outside hitter is on the left side of the court. Setters start on the right but are constantly moving to get to a ball. Back row can hit but for best results the setters usually set front row. Instead of "spiking" most people just call it "hitting" but that's obviously not a big deal. But the MOST IMPORTANT things that coaches are looking for are the people that have great attitudes, are loud, and are aggressive. Call every ball you go for, cheer on the others, and never ever ever let a ball drop. So maybe you can look at volleyball sites about rules and tips depending on how beginner you are. Good luck and have fun!

Oh while man my coach was hard and for me not knowing how to play at all this year was my first year.. We had know the roattions for each position and you had mastered them she gave us individual test on them and it was crazy!! We needed to know our defensive and offensive spots for each position. We definitly needed to know how to overhand serve, pass, not really set but you have to had a good clue about it. You need to be able to move quickly, have great reaction times.. Stay in shape if your coach was anything liek mines then you need to stay in shape run a few miles a day.. if you have soemone who can throw the ball at your platform and just practice your sets bumps and hits.. Know the correct way of hitting.. thats all i can say pratice and my coach was rlly gud cuz we made 4th districts so obviously what im telling you know can rlly help you.. Goodluck!!

Well yu have to know some stuff&Willing to learn.
Yu probably hear that allot but In this case its true.
Decide what yu want to be(Spiker Setter Passer)
But be open to whatever they want yu to try to do.Know how to rotate or move Switch positions.
Get Familiar to plays And familiar to how to do things.
Set-There are usually 1-2 Setters on a team. They try to get the second hit and Always try to get it the Front middle position.Like throw ball up so yu can spike.
Passers-Take 1st hit usually try to get it to setter.
Spiker-After tha two hits(Pass&Sett)Uals pikesers are at tha net area to spick(Help win points).
Well thats all I can say easy to say in person(:
