it seems that you have either corrupted some files in windows folder, prob some virus, put in your recovery disc and try recovery your windows... worst case you have to reinstall your windows if you don't know how to fix it yourself or can't get someone to have a look...

if all that don't work then it's probably a dead hard drive which most likely isn't as your can reach the mode choosing screen

Try turning your PC completely off and then switching it on. If problem persists, put in the WIndows CD and repair, if the problem still continues it's a hardware problem. Not really sure if it's the RAM, but since you didn't mention a blue screen of death, it might not be the RAM per se.

If your computer allows you to be in safe mode long enough to try a system restore then you should try that. Otherwise try hitting F11 or whatever button is the setup key when it first comes on. Go to the BIOS screen. And run a system check. You should be able to find the instructions on your computer systems website.

Yeah! Either corrupted system files or infected with virus...

Download and run this tool in Safe mode:

    http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/avptool2010?l...

Its not an Anti virus program. Its just a virus removal tool.... It won't work in normal mode... Boot into Safe mode.... As you are unable to boot into Safe mode (may be due to presence of viruses) try logging in "Directory services restore mode".

NOTE: This tool will delete badly infected files which cannot be recovered in any manner.

For real time protection, install Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 from below link:

    http://support.kaspersky.com/kis2010?level=2

OR any other anti virus program and update it by connecting internet regularly...

If the above steps doesn't work then try Windows XP repair. Follow these steps:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/...

I recommend you to repair OS even after successful virus removal using virus removal tool.
