My son's dog has started digging up his yard.?

There was a gopher but now the gopher is gone but the dog keeps digging and dragging in dirt. He has a young child with another on the way and would like to keep the dog but can not have the floor dirty all the time. Has anyone ever had to deal with this and how did you fix it?

Update:

Wow... I don't think he is neglected I just think we needed advise...I will never use this avenue to do that again... a lot of angry people here...BUT to those of you who actually gave me advise without the anger thank you...

You deal with this by walking the dog or playing with him so that he doesn't have so much pent up energy or suffer from neglect and boredom.

Just because your son has a kid and another on the way doesn't mean the dog's needs are less, so stop using that as an excuse.

I sure hope he doesn't plan to dump the dog because the kids came along, that happens so often and it accounts for so many euthanized dogs - it's needless and selfish. Pay some attention to the dog, you don't get rid of the older kid because a new one comes along, why would you get rid of the dog now?

I deal with it by letting my dogs dig, and then wiping off their paws.

I sweep the floor if they bring in mud.

A little bit of dirt never hurt anyone, and is no reason to get rid of a dog.

(Chances are there is another gopher there, and he is trying to get to it.)

Dogs dig usually put of extreme BOREDOM. Your son needs to spend time with the dog every day, teaching him new things, playing with him, AND walking/running him. A dog is a big responsibility. Your son needs to take more responsibility for his dog.

Well, dogs love to dig. If they have nothing else to do they will dig out of boredom. Hunting breeds will hunt for critters under ground. Let the dog out with supervision or leash walk him.

This dog needs a job or go hunting, depends what breed is t? If no time, put him on a treadmill. He might do not get enough exercises or he it is bored.
