Large black saltwater muscles?

Recently I was on vacation on the beaches around Tampa Bay, Florida. From St. Pete beach to Clearwater beach there were large black colored looking saltwater muscles littering the beach. Literally hundreds of them for every mile of coast. 8-10 inches long, elongated rough looking shells. Anyone know what species these are?
