Minimum enclosure size should be 4ft x 2ft for an adult boxie. Using a tank is not practical for a box turtle; they have a hard time with the concept of glass and it's difficult and expensive to find a tank that is 4ft x 2ft. Building a "turtle table" which is basically a book shelf laid on it's back, is the cheaper and practical choice . Here's some instructions to build one: http://www.unc.edu/~dtkirkpa/stuff/table.html

Be nice to know what sort of boxie you have.

Asian box turtles need high humidity and for them a tank is almost a requirement. A 40 breeder is the smallest to think about. You want square footage of area not depth. With a glass top.

North American box turtles fare much better in tortoise tables or even the very large 90L rubber maid container. Personally I use rubber maids for hatchlings, and allow the adults to have free roam of a room with tile flooring in the house over winter, in summer they have an outdoor pen they live in that is 10 x 16 feet and 1 foot deep. Another indoor option is a Kiddie pool.

It depnds on what kind it is, as I have an ornate box turtle and full grown they are about the size of an adult hand. It is in a 20 gallon and I leave it out in the day. check out Austin's Turtle Page for infor on the different types.

a 70 or 90 will do fine for 1 or 2 adult boxies but no more.. its 4 by 2 but the above posters are correct also in saying boxies dont do well with glass if they can see throught it they want to get out so you should put something around it to cover it up so they cant see out

im assuming you know these are not water turtles they are land turtles

Tanks are not usually large enough for tortoises. They like to roam. Build a tortoise table instead. This is a great care site:

a tank will not be sufficent. he will need a area 4 by 4 and 12 inches high. this is usually accomplished outdoors

This is the correct way to measure tank size:

10 gallons of tank per inch of shell length, so go measure your turtle's shell now
