Cats claws (can u clip them yourself)?

Hi there everyone

I have two young cats 12 & 18 weeks

Their claws are long and starting to get caught in the carpet pile.

Can i trim them myself like when i did my bugie's claws

Or is this a job for a trained person to do ??.

many thanks in advance for all your help.

Yes, their claws are like needles. But while they are catching on carpet loops now, that is more a problem in that they have not fully learned to retract their claws. They will as they get older.

But yes, you can trim off the sharp point. I am posting a link to a trimmer that is very handy, and should be found in almost any pet store.

The hardest part with a kitten is getting them to stay still long enough. And if your kittens are like mine were, with white paws and almost transparent claws, a real challenge.

You start by massaging their paws, so they get used to you doing that. Then, you gently press on the paw pad, and the claw will extend. But you don't try and trim right then. You get them used to what you are doing. Then, you can try to snip off the sharp tip of perhaps one to two claws at a time, depending on how cooperative they are. If you only get one or two claws per session, soon you will get them all.

It is better to err on the side of taking too little off then getting too much off. I never try and trim the rear claws. Only the front ones.

Ya u can clip cat claws yourself. It just takes patience, practice, and for really finicky cats, another person to help.

At almost any store that sells pet related items, you'll find a pair of cat claw clippers. Mine look like people scissors except near the end there is a half circle in each of the blades.

To cut your cats nails, get them in a position where you can easily reach their nails (this position may take some practice). Inside the every nail of every cat, there is something called (at least here in the US) the quick. It's sensitive blood filled tissue. In some cats, it's visible as a brown, grey, black, or pink stripe. In other cats, it's not visible at all. Just be careful you don't clip this, or your cat will start to bleed.

If you haven't figured this out already, cats claws can be exposed by gently yet forcefully squeezing their foot. The magic place takes some time to find usually, and if the cat squirms you may have to reposition yourself.

    Hope this helps!!!

Yes. Buy a good pair of clippers (the better ones are expensive). Cut right where the nail is curving. If you can see the bloodline in the nail, be sure NOT to cut there. Just blunt the nail.

It's good to get the kitties used to have you cut their nails. Otherwise, if you try to start when they are adult, it will be more difficult.

Source(s): I have two cats- one is 2 years old and one is 3 years old. I've been cutting their nails since they were little. One is really easy to do and doesn't require holding. The other one (who happens to have 6 toes on all 4 feet!! ) requires someone to hold him and he's still kind of freaky about it, but....I do them both.

Yes you can. I use human toenail clippers on mine. And they are 2 and 3 years of age.

Just be careful not to get them too short, and if you start while they are young...they will get used to it!

yes they have clippers at the pet store. just make sure you dont clip them too short, it will make them sore for a few days!
