Does my employer have to pay me for being sent home/ snow emergencies?

I work at a daycare under the school system. Last Thursday (12-23) I went to work at 10 found out the heat had not been on since the building opened at 7 and it was cold. My boss came in at 10:30 called the superintendents office but they were closed for the holiday, so she made the decision to close the building after finding out the boiler was broken. She called all the parents to have all of the children picked up and made an announcement that as soon as the children went home we could go home and we would get paid for our whole shift we were supposed to work. we were out at 12:30. Monday we got a big snowstorm and we were closed because it was a State of Emergency. The daycare has never closed due to a State of Emergency in the 20 years it's been open. Today the superintendent called and said we would not be paid for either days. I didn't really expect to get paid for the snow emergency but i did for the day we were sent home since I was expecting to work my full 8 hour shift. We are under a contract but there is nothing that says we do or don't get paid for either things. Is there any kind of law in Massachusetts for that?

MA has reporting pay which means you must be paid 3 hours if your shift is canceled after going to work, that is the only law regarding being sent home.

You are entitled to be paid for work that you actually do. You are not entitled to be paid for work that you did not do - even if it was not your preference to leave early.

In this situation, the day care was closed as a result of an act of God. This means that the day care did not get money from the PARENTS for those days of closure, either. They don't get paid, so it is reasonable and logical that the employees don't get paid.

There is no law stating that you get paid for hours not actually worked...even if your boss verbally told you so, apparently she was wrong.

I would go to my boss who todl me would get paid and ask what changed. Perhaps she will be able to get you the pay she said you would get...

I am from Ireland, so I don't know what way your law works. I work with children and due to the weather conditions, we did get paid. Its not our fault if it snows, so you should get paid. Speak to your boss about this. I hope you get it. Good luck.

I was expecting to go on 3 service calls today...

By your logic... All 3 should pay me anyway.

I think that you get paid, since it wasent your fault. but imnot sure, itmay be taken out of your holiday pay.
