Jodi-lynn, how wonderful you are to reach out to get help for your mom! I'm sorry she's struggling with this pain. Sometimes the pain is worse at times; they call these flares. She may possibly having a flare right now. Cold weather, stress, overdoing it can cause flares.
I understand how your mom feels about the harsh meds. I also hate that drugged feeling. The one medicine that helps me the most is a muscle relaxer called Zanaflex. I like it 'cause I can take a fourth or half of a tablet if I need it. That way I get relief without the groggy feeling. But we all respond differently to meds. What works for me may not work for your mom. She needs to talk to her doctor and explain she needs relief, but doesn't want any strong medication. Together, she and her doctor can work on finding some relief.
There are some supplements that may help. My rheumatologist sent me to the the health food store for malic acid with magnesium. I can tell when I haven't taken it. He also put me on B12 for the fatigue. I was on shots initially, but then started taking sublingual. Your mom can take very high doses of pure B12 cause what her body doesn't use, it flushes out.
There are also things like hot baths, heating pads, massages, reflexology, tens units, water exercise, creams such as aspercream that may help some with the pain. Some insurances will cover massages with a doctor's prescription. She'll just have to try them to see what works for her.
Just being there for her is the best thing you can do. Give her a gentle shoulder massage or foot massage when she's in pain. Helping her around the house with simple things can make a world of difference in how she feels also.
Hope something I've shared will be new and helpful.... Make your mom see her doctor and discuss her pain issues and possible treatments that may help. Hope she finds relief soon!

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.
If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.
Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.
And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.
I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.
It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.
Today, I want to do the same for you!

She should get an appointment with a physical therapist first of all. Excercise is the best medicine for arthritis. There is also the option of testing different things in her diet. One patient I read about got rid of all the food that had artificial coloring in it, and she eventually didn't need medicine anymore for pain. A good place to go is to arthritistoday.com or to the arthritis foundation site. They are two sites I know of that have accurate information and are up to date. I have osteoarthritis in my spine and have been studying like crazy to get the info I need for myself and I see lots of info on fibromylagia. Your local library should have lots of info on the subject alone also.Good luck!!!!

Vitamin D3 is good but you should also take 1g (1000mg)/day of magnesium chloride.

Laser therapy! It works amazing, after a few months, your pain will be really reduced.. if not gone. I have had nothing but good experiences with it.
