Tax question on money earned from a hobby?
I will be receiving a 1099 for money I earned in 2010 from bowling in tournaments. My question is, can I deduct expenses from bowling those tournaments in order to minimize taxes? For example, can I deduct the cost of a bowling ball I purchased in 2010 or something like that?

If you have income from hobbies, you can deduct expenses necessary to produce that income. The year of income/expenses shall align for the deduction to apply. Any tax preparation software will guide you through this.

Yes, but. The income goes on line 21 as Other Income and the expenses go on Schedule A as a miscellaneous itemized deduction subject to the 2% limitation and further not to exceed the amount on line 21. If you don't itemize, you can't deduct the expenses.

is the ball just for the tournaments or do you use it for the rest of your personal bowling?
reporting hobby income would be on a sch C and any expenses that are legitimate have to have a business purpose
but when you also has a personal use for the item, it means you have to have one specifically for the business besides your personal one ie. a land line into your home that you might use for business is not an expense because it is a personal phone, you would need a totally separate one for the business for it to be a business expense

What is a small amount? If it's 1000+ dollars then yes. It's not a hobby it's an income generating business. If it's all cash be careful

Any and all hobby expenses; mileage, motels, meals, supplies, etc. However, if you run into a loss you cannot deduct the loss against other income. Makes perfect sense; if you make money you will be taxed on it; but, if you lose money you cannot decuct it. It is always all about the money.
