Did you have your baby girl's ears pierced?

If so, where did you have it done? My friend had her daughter's ears pierced at the pediatrician's office (which would make me more comfortable) but our pediatrician doesn't do ear piercing. I'm hesitant to go to the traditional mall stores because of hygiene reasons (don't ask me why, that's where I had my ears pierced but I also wasn't 2 months old). Are there any other places that do infant ear piercing that I'm not thinking about?

I would contact another pediatrician in your area that does do ear piercing.

I don't have children, but my mother got mine done by the pediatrician when I was 6 months old. I loved them as a little girl and I still love them now so I don't agree with people saying "wait and see if she wants them".

The ones in the mall are sanitary, the only thing is that they usually use crap earrings. If you buy real solid gold earrings for them to use, then it should be fine. Or you can try calling other pediatricians. I know it might sound weird, but a tattoo/body piercing shop would probably do it as well, and they are extremely sterile.

No. I think it is mean and unnecessary to pierce a little baby's ears. It doesn't benefit the baby any and it will hurt. With my daughter I waited until she asked for it, around 4 years old. I will do the same with my new baby girl.

I was 2 months old when my mother got my ears pierced, as were both of my sisters. They were done at the mall. I am 6 months pregnant with my first and I plan on getting her ears pierced at about 2 months at the mall also. It is better to have them done when they are younger because they will not pull on them and you are taking care of them so they are less likely to get infected. My sisters daughter was 5 when she decided she wanted her ears pierced but they kept getting infected due to her touching them and playing with them before they were healed. Good luck.

funny story about that: when our baby was born, her father and i had a series of near-rows over this very subject. he is hindu, so piercing the ears and nose when still an infant is traditional in his culture. my family has a bad history of allergy to metal, so i wanted to wait until she was at least 12yrs old to try and cut down the chance of her developing it.

then i suddenly realized that i am seriously allergic to nickel and other base metals - and my ears were done when i was 14! so i said fine, let's get it done - i live with metal allergy and as long as the earrings are 22k gold minimum, we're all fine in my family. indian jewellry normally is of such a high standard so no problem.

except first we went to get her shots. i made him come with because no way i was going through it by myself.

when we came out, he phoned the piercer and cancelled the appointment - he couldn't put her through something like what he'd just witnessed again, LOL.

anyway, she's 3yrs 9mo and is bugging me to get her ears done - she has a wardrobe of earrings waiting for her from her indian and non-indian relatives.

one thing i will NOT do is take her to any place they do it with a gun. my second daughter has had her ears pierced 5 times now by guns and all times, it went very wrong.

    - swelling

    - bruising around the piercing

    - infection

    - and the last two times, the skin at the back of her ear grew up to enclose the backing! the first time (she was 7), it took me 30min with a hot, wet washcloth to loosen the skin enough to stretch it over the backing and get it out. the last time, a month ago (she's 21), she had to go to the doctor and have him nick the skin and pull the backing out from inside her ear.

because of this and because of my own terrible experience with a nose piercing done by gun (i had to let it grow back because i couldn't stop the infection - swelled up so badly the stud vanished right inside my nostril and i was able to pull it out from inside, even with the ball on the end, there was so much tissue degradation!), i will be taking my youngest to a piercing parlour. my second daughter had her nose done at a piercing parlour where they use a canula, a hollow needle, to remove a core of tissue and create an actual tunnel for the stud (or hoop, in her case). ZERO problems with it; same with my sister (her ears are allergic to base metal, her nose isn't; ears were done by gun, nose was done by canula).

so that's how i'll get my youngest one's ears done.

NOPE! i figured it was best to just wait until she is able to voice her opinion on whether or not she wants them pierced. Once she's old enough to care for them, then she can get them. So sorry, can't offer you advice on where to get them done.

    No.

Don't you have ears on the sides of your own head, if you feel the need to make holes in some?

No I didn't. My daughter made her own choice when she was old enough. Your paediatrician won't do it for a reason.
