"Know the truth and the truth shall set you free", what does this verse mean to you?

Whether you are christian, jew, muslim, believer or non believer, you must admit that there are some powerful thoughts within the bible, as elsewhere. I found this to be one of the more poignant lessons within the bible, although the writer left out a very important step, that being acting upon the truth. However, regardless of its incompleteness, have you in your life found a truth that has set you free?

Please include your religious belief, thanks.

Update:

Thank you, but no. I am not seeking to join you in your truth, religion, but I was curious if a truth has enlightened you? Have you learned something that has broken chains in your life, has something made your life better or more free, now that you know it?

It means if you know the truth--that gods don't exist--then it will set you free from the restraints of religion.

People fill their lives with all kinds of lies. The have addictions to substances, religion, negative thinking, etc. So if you take a person & write down all their issues you will see they might have a problem getting a mate or they might not have a job or a health issue stops them, etc. So what can set them free. They neecd to be uncluttered, unblocked. All the have to do is ASK...then be open to recieve. Yet, most people are not able to recieve because they have thoughts that are not true. A person needs money to eat but they won't go for food stamps cause they think they need to work for money. The truth is all money comes from the same source which is God or whatever the personw wants to call it. A person doesn't have love in their life but keeps wanting it. They need to figure out what they want & why they really are sabotaging this from happening. They might say people don't like them cause they are fat but they are fat cause they are not being truthful. The truth is they are afraid of having a relationship. If they allow the truth to come up by first asking for it then recieving it, they learn that they are afraid of losing love so they really don't want it. Look at every problem a person has & ASK the universe the question "What is the truth about this?' then know you will recieve the answer & accept it. The whole Universe is here to help us. The sun is for shining but the Universe is for giving up & it does in amazy ways. We don't need to follow a religion we just nee to ask & recieve.

I was involved in a cult. They had a long list of do's and don'ts. After I got out of it, I had what some would call a spiritual epiphany. A lot of good stuff that God revealed to me. Religion is man made with a lot of rules that do nothing for our salvation. Religion and Eastern philosophies that advocate enlightenment and different steps up a spiritual ladder are useless. Nobody can ever make God love them by their good deeds. God loves us just the way we are, faults and all. We don't have to study at the feet of a master or climb remote mountains to visit some monastery. God is right next to us and always has been. All we have to do is reach out to him.

Christ came into this world, led a perfectly sinless life for us, and paid the price for our sins on the cross. We can sit back and relax, confident in the knowledge that it has all been done. There's nothing anybody could ever do to top that. This knowledge frees us from rules and gives us a peace of mind. We no longer fear death. We know we are going to heaven when we die because of our faith in him. This is what real freedom is all about and what this verse means.

John 8:32.....And ye shall know the truth; that is, you shall more fully and clearly know the truth; by which may be either understood Christ, who styles himself, The way, the truth, and the life; or those propositions of truth which Christ hath revealed. There must be some knowledge of truth in a soul before it can believe; for how shall they believe (saith the apostle) in him of whom they have not heard? but a fuller and clearer knowledge of the truth is got by degrees, by those who studiously seek after it, and walk close with God.

The statement Jesus is making in John 8:32 is not a reference to just anyone's subjective truth. It is a reference specifically to the truth of His word, as stated in verse 31. Jesus speaks further in verse 34 about being a slave to sin, so the freedom He is talking about is the freedom from the dominating power of sin in our lives. The truth He is talking about in particular is the truth about our union with Him in His death and resurrection which is the means by which we can set free from the oppression of the old spiritual self who is our slave master from birth, and causes the direction of our lives to be toward a self-centered existence. Christ sets us free from this oppressor by putting this old self to death with Him and giving us the new resurrected life of the Holy Spirit when we receive Him by faith. The Spirit enables us to live unto God through the new affections and motivations He puts within our hearts.

While people may experience a sense of freedom in other truths they have learned in life, this is the particular truth Jesus had in mind when He made this statement. It is, in fact, the most liberating freedom ever known to mankind.

The truth = Jesus (John 14:6)

Knowing the truth = abiding in Him (1 John 5:20)

and you will know the truth [abide in Him], and the truth [He] will make you free."

Nothing, because 'truth' in the biblical context is mythology.
