Why is celebrating big plays considered bad sportsmanship?

As long as you don't do some Ochocinco type thing, is it really bad sportsmanship

Update:

Sarge:Nobody wants to watch a game with no emotion. That's just boring. The Ncaa needs to lighten up a little.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee adopted the following statement in February 2009:

"After reviewing a number of plays involving unsportsmanlike conduct, the committee is firm in its support of the unsportsmanlike conduct rules as they currently are written and officiated. Many of

these fouls deal with players who inappropriately draw attention to themselves in a premeditated, excessive or prolonged manner. Players should be taught the discipline that reinforces football as a

    team game."

Additionally, there is a distinct possibility that Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls may be enforced as live-ball fouls next year. That means that big plays may be nullified by such penalties.

So you can celebrate big plays, just do so with your teammates and keep it short and sweet.

in college it's strict because its the style of the game, but its not that bad. like it's ridiculous that a salute would get the penalty, but thats not bad sportsmanship its just that its a lot more about the team than the player (which is why a lot of schools don't have names on jerseys) where in the NFL it is about the razzle dazzle and it is much more about highlighting the stars, so it has to be offensive, or time consuming to have an affect in the pro's

There is nothing wrong with celebrating big plays. Only celebrating bad plays by the other team, or doing some "look at me" bullshit when you make a play. Big difference.

No idea why the league would put rules on this sort of thing. The league does everything they can to get people to watch games and will do anything for more money, yet fans love to see fun celebrations but they make rules against it. No one wins here

I think some celebrations are fine if they're knee-jerk. However, a lot of them are terribly embarrassing or just stupid.

In the NCAA, you're not permitted to call attention to yourself. It's a great rule, and I'd like to see it adopted by the NFL Those "sissy dances" after a TD, are ridiculous.

a game shouldn't come down to the refs judgment penalty

I really didnt see anything wrong with K-states celebration, i think its a good rule but it ruined K-States chance.

That's what I say. To this day, I don't know why they banned the Ickey Shuffle. (Cincinnati Bengals). I liked his dance. -------------------------------
