Dogs...My stepdaughter went on vacation and left her two dachshunds at home...?

They are normally kenneled so she kept them kenneled and a friend was supposed to go there twice a day to feed, water and let them out. They left on Saturday night and found out Wednesday that no one had been to their house AT ALL! Needless to say, they cut vacation short and raced home.

The dogs are alive, but what are the chances of kidney damage or other problems they might have had without water and living in such horrid conditions? I told her to take them to the vet, but I'm afraid she might not as she's a "they look fine to me" kind of person.

Any help to pass along would be appreciated...Thanks!

She can't check their organs, so 'they look fine' isn't really appropriate - make sure she understands this. My dog was running around and playing, bright eyed, until the moment she collapsed between the bed and the wall and had to be put on an IV drip, due to dehydration from an illness lasting a month.

If she was alone, trapped and without water for 4 days, she'd want a doctor to check her over, so she has no excuse.

I hope her "friend" is ashamed.

If I had left my dogs with someone I would be calling them once or twice a day to check on the dogs. Why did she not call to check on them? I would never trust the friend again...ever. I would also take the dogs to the vet to be checked out and send the bill to the friend.

My first thought was that the dogs may be fine, thinking that it may have taken them 24 hours to drink the water that was left in the first place.

However, after more research, I found that dehydration starts at 24 hours and can kill some dogs after just 72 hours.

Even if they didn't finish their water for 48 hours, they were without water for at least 48 hours.

At least one dog needs to be seen my a professional immediately to see if there are signs of dehydration, then if there are, both dogs need to go in ASAP for IV fluids.

If she resists, tell her you will pay for the initial examination, it will not cost but $30 to just "get seen" and look for immediate danger signs.

If there was water & feed when thay left & were gone 4days the animals should be fine in a day or 2.

Hopefully they were drinking out of the toilet or some other form of water. Take them to the vet and explain the situation. They will do a quick test for dehydration and if they need fluids, they will give subcutaneous fluids.
