Why does a ball drop each new year?

As a non-American, I don't understand the significance/symbology in the U.S.A. of a ball dropping to bring in the new year. What's behind that?

    Im American and Ive nvr evn heard of a ball dropping thingy or watevr ur talking bout………so i wouldnt have the slightest of clues

    I don't know what's behind it but it's just tradition I'm only fifteen but I just know it's tradition :)! Happy new years!!!
