What do you eat on New Years day and why?

My mother always told me that if you eat cabbage on New Years Day , you will have money all year long. I always make cabbage. She also says black eyed peas will work. Or, if you make a pair of pillow cases on New Years Day will bring you good luck too. Any more old wives tales out there?

    To avoid pollution, I prefer eating the food prepared at home so that new year starts very fresh.
