Head of Household tax question?

My dad and mom split back in March, that made me the sole person in the house with a job because my mom does not work. Shes been collecting social security and food stamps along with the money I give her for bills but I do not have documentation of any about of money I give her. Do I still qualify to file as head of household?

Also its just my Mom, sister (15) and me who live in the house.

Update:

I live in the USA

Maybe. Remarkably, none of the information that you have provided is relevant. The things that actually do matter are:

    1. If you provided half or less than half of the cost of keeping up the household, then you do not qualify to file as head of household.

    2. If she files jointly with your father and they claim your sister, then you do not qualify to file as head of household.

    3. If there is some other reason why you cannot claim your mother as a dependent and cannot claim your sister as a dependent, then you do not qualify to file as head of household.

    4. If you provide over half of the cost of keeping up the household and you can claim your mother, sister, or both, as your dependents, then you might qualify to file as head of household.

Not really enough info to say for sure, but you might be able to claim one or both of your mom or sis as dependents. If you can and do, you'd be able to file as head of household IF you can show that you provided over half the cost of keeping up the household.

If you have no documentation of the money you give her or of bills you pay directly, you'd have a problem if you are audited.

But some things to consider, that would enter into whether you can claim them - do you rent, or do your mom and dad own the house you live in? How much does she get in ss and in food stamps? How much did you make this year?

"but I do not have documentation of any about of money I give her"

There will be quite a few issues here. Mom is apparently collecting SSI and foodstamps by asserting she has no income. When she filed, she had to report your income, did she?

Do you live in section 8 housing?

In order to claim your sister, you simply have to show you have higher income than mom, are older than sis and that you lived in the same household.

In order to claim your mother, you'd have to prove you provided more than half of her support. Possible, but unlikely.

As for claiming HOH, exactly how much did you make? If you are low income, single tends to work out the same as HOH.
