How do i start 2011 with a nice girl?

im coming back to school from winter break starting tomarrow and i want to know if i should start getting to know other people or if i should ask out one of my friends,

(i would preferbly want to go out with other people becuse i look at some of my female friends as if they were family but not all of them)

and if i do approach other girls how should i start off? im a nice and genuine guy but im a shy clutz around girls. Xd

any suggestions?
