What to do while in Italy in August/September?

I'm thinking of going to Italy this year for the first time, most probably during August or September.

Any tips or must see places? I like anything and everything, I just want to soak up all the culture, oh and do you think it's important for me to learn as much Italian as I can before I go? Or can I get by on English?

Thank you!

August is the vacation period here in Italy, but the tourist attractions will all be up and running. Some businesses may be closed. If you're looking for festivals or special exhibitions, the Biennale will be running in Venice throughout much of the year including August/September or you can attend an opera in the old Roman colosseum in Verona. In addition, the Venice film festival and the Historic Regatta are early in September and worth participating in. There's also a horse show just across the causeway from Venice. The Giostra del Saracino in Arezzo in September is fun. There are parades and events in medieval costume leading up to the Joust. Various other locations also have Renaissance/medieval festivals featuring competitions among the various neighborhoods. The Rificolona will be held on the 7th of September in Florence in the evening. Ravello on the Amalfi coast has an excellent classical music festival or there's a Jazz Festival on the island of Ischia. You might also see the Celebration of the Holy Nail in the Duomo in Milan in September and go to Gorgonzola for some very good food at their festival. The San Gennaro festival is one of the big events of the year in Naples and occurs in September. There are many, many other possibilities like the Sagra dell’Acciuga in Cinque Terre in the town of Monterosso (anchovies).

Avoid August. Hot, crammed full of tourists, difficult to find hotel rooms, spaces at campsites, places on the beach, tables at restaurants, prices at maximum ripoff level...........

Go in September. Most people back at work, no crowds on beaches, in hotels, etc, prices starting to ease off, temperature more comfortable, sea just as warm........

Example: Apartment in Cefalu, Sicily: rental per week in August (between 6th and 20th): 1000 Euros. Same apartment in September, rental per week (between 10th and 30th): 670 Euros.

Your flight would be approximately 15 hours long. the climate would be very heat... so, convey a handkerchief to place over your nostril, because of fact the folk there do no longer bathe usually, nor do they use deodorant. They DO scent... so use the hanky to hold slightly fragrance, then hide your nostril with it if issues get slightly ripe. you will choose it... there continues to be a rubbish strike happening there... so rubbish would be important. yet, it extremely is captivating!! you will adore Italy!!!
