People in rural areas will be better able to identify with a symbol like, say, an elephant or a railway engine than read names. It is easier for the candidates also to ask to vote for a "cycle" which will be easier to remember, instead of his name. All ballot papers contain the names of candidates and the symbols.

Lets put is this way, why does every company has a logo? It is a unique identifier.
Candidate name may not be unique but symbol is always unique. Even if candidate name is not same it may be similar thus confusing. Then what about people who are residents in state coming from outside and don't know local language as well as English. And there are lots of people who are illiterate. For all practical reasons, it is totally reasonable to have election symbols on election ballots and voting machines along with candidate name.
Cheers and belated Happy New year.

The whole thing is all are NOT educated. Majority of the Voters can only cast their votes by watching the symbol. They cannot read the names.
It will take another 100 years for India, to come to that position, when all Voters will be able at least to read the names of the Candidates and Vote.

To avoid any confusion of similar kind of party name Election Commission introduced Election Symbols
.
Political parties have been defined by various writers in various ways. Political parties makes people politically conscious, i.e., aware them about the role as citizens which is done through election. For the purpose of holding elections symbols is of immense importance as election symbols plays a vital role in demarcating the various political parties among each other. In our country a great percentage of people could not read the name of the candidates and the political parties. Thus symbol system helps them to elect their candidates.
Modern democracy says for participation by all in the democratic system. So symbol system is a valuable weapon to choose the political parties.

Symbols are used because many voters cannot read proficiently and require symbols rather than those pesky and confusing words. There is no place on the planet where "all are educated".

Don't think of your state or Kerala & west Bengal. Yet there are some illiterate peoples in all states of India. That is why the elected politicians are corrupt.
