I'm writing a book, set in ancient times. The hero leaves his land because his mentally ill mother tries to kill him.
Didn't mean to distress you--this is an academic question entirely.

there are many, simply being pushed over the edge could cause it a few examples of actual mental illnesses that could lead to that type of murder would be, bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, Clinical Psychopathic , brain injuries to the frontal lobe I am sure is more... just cannot think immediately of any others.

Either schizophrenia or psychopathy. The two are nothing like each other though so be carefulwith your research.
