Mississippi John Hurt picks a nice clean blues and has been covered by the likes of Taj Mahal.

    Here's a nice little song

Sure, my dad's a blues guitarist and a big fan of blues music, and as a grew up i fell in love with the blues too. i like Mississippi John Hurt's style, clean and perfect.

I'll have to say a tie between Avalon Blues-since it's likely none of us would have heard of him without that tune-and My Creole Belle

If your interested, Jesse Colin Young did a great cover of Creole Belle on the Together album.

Also, Tom Paxton wrote a great tune about John-"Did You Hear John Hurt?" -

I was playing in a country rock band in Toronto about 4 years ago and we covered a few MJH tunes but more straight ahead rock style. I was really intrigued by how simple his parts sounded but what a hard time I had playing them. My wife got me his recordings from the '60's when he was 'rediscovered' and then I went ahead and got this great collection from his first recordings.

I think my favorite song by John is Frankie. I love that song, there's a swing in his playing that makes it something other then country/appalachain/border balladry from the UK but the melody is totally unlike a typical blues song. The guy just seemed like a good human being and unlike alot of blues masters who were super angry about not getting their due back in their heyday he always struck me as just simply bemused all this white people wanted to hear his guitar playing.

I think he was a staple in New York and if you listen to any acoustic playing of most of the 'heavies' of that time (paul simon, young and stills) most of them are trying to double the melody while playing but none of the get it right - or as right as John.

anyway, enough rambling. I love this guy, I listen to him at least once a week.

yeah, mississippi john hurt was really the artist that got me into the pre-war era of blues more than any other and he is still amongst my favorites from that era of blues music. the 1928 okeh sessions are my favorite. not a weak song in the entire collection. the rediscovery recordings of the 60s are fine, but few things in music have knocked me off my feet like the first time i heard the okeh sessions.
