HTC Desire v Galaxy S?

I currently have a 3 year old Samsung g600 which is playing up. The signal has completely had it. I know it is the phone and not the sim as I have put my sim in a motorola and I have full signal where my phone has 0 signal. It has been playing up for about 6 months and I have just had enough.

Anyway I was wondering what people thought of the HTC Desire and the Galaxy S? I have read many reviews and each seem to take a different view on which is better. I can not afford an Iphone as though the contract is the same the Iphone has a more expensive initial cost.

I am thinking of switching from my current Virgin Mobile Liberty sim to either orange or O2 swaying towards an orange contract.

If anyone has any other suggestions? Any phones coming out in the next couple of months. I can tide myself over until the right phone is out there for me. I may also be going abroad for a while so don't really want to rope myself into a 24 months contract before I know what is happening anyway.

I would like the phone to have:

Android,

have a reasonable camera (I have a digital camera so it is not the end of the world),

a qwerty keyboard - whether that be touchscreen or physical format,

WIFI (I travel a fair bit and my laptop it quite heavy to carry about all the time),

Reasonable battery life though I realise that with a smartphone it is likely that it will be poorer than I am use to

Sat Nav - Whether free or like with orange included in the contract (looking a panther 30 or 35)

MP3 player/ ability to watch films etc. - This phone will also be replacing my Ipod Video 5th Generation 60gb

I would select the Desire over the Galaxy. I own a Nexus One and the design of the Desire is very similar. I love HTC phones and I think they integrate Android into their designs batter than any other manufacturer.

    I have a Galaxy S on o2.

The WiFi isn't amazing, but obviously depends on what you want it for. It doesn't have satnav but does have google maps which is just as good in my opinion!

The camera on the galaxy is good, but doesn't have flash.

The screen on the Galaxy is probably one of the biggest you will get for watching things on, and with expandable memory, you will be able to store more on it. The qwerty keyboard on the galaxy takes a bit of getting used to, and i still mess up a bit and I've had it for 4 months.

Overall the galaxy is a good phone but it does depend what you want from it!

If you are possible skipping the country for a while, seriously I'd look at a pre-owned Desire from somewhere like CEX, and staying on the sim-only contract.

Phones are around 200 quid in mint condition for desire, 350 or so for galaxy.

I think that Galaxy S is a brilliant smartphone. It has the Android operation system, a 4-inch touchscreen, Wifi, GPS and MP3 player. Basically everything you want from a mobile phone.

    Go with the Desire

build quality is better-I like my phones to have some metal on them not all plasticy like most of samsungs phones are

Runs 2.2 and is easy to root and flash a custom ROM

    Samsung sucks-reasons i say that

Poor GPS performance with no official fix

been awaiting an update that they promised to be out like 6 months ago and its not

Galaxy S suffers from poor GPS performance. Given your requirement, I have a different phone in mind.

    Nokia N8

    1. offline maps with voice guided turn by turn navigation(no need to cnnect to internet for maps)

    2. build in divx, drag-n-drop movies

    3. USB OTG. connect a pen drive to the phone and copy content to/from pendrive

    4. Dolby and HDMI out

    5. 12mp camera that is best in mobile devices and even competes with entry level PnS cameras
