What is the sociological difference between the words 'common' and normal'?
Common
happening often and to many people or in many places
http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/common_1
Normal
Functioning or occurring in a natural way

It is becoming quite common to have a poor diet. It is becoming very common for people to not exercise enough, and even more common for people to be over stressed.
The other common theme running through our society is chronic illness. Strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, cancers and even back pain are all becoming increasingly common ailments. It is becoming so common that people are starting to think it is ‘normal'.
However, things can only be called common, but 'not' normal.
When the body is in a state of optimal health, all systems are in equilibrium and no external manifestations of disequilibrium (symptoms) are apparent. Many of the subtle changes we observe, even in our pets, are early warning signs that there is imbalance existing deep within the body. These are not "diseases" per se but rather are commonly observed deviations from this state of equilibrium.

Thanks for your own explanation...... good.
To me, common means ordinary and normal means usual. The difference between ordinary and usual can perhaps be better understood through their antonyms...... extraordinary and unusual...... common isn't necessarily desirable whereas normal is mostly desirable.

Yay, stirring up some controversy. That's the hip-hop way. Lol Just kidding. Umm technically speaking, there's a two-letter difference. But seriously, think about this. A black guy goes up to his white friend and says, "What's up my n*gga?". The white guy responds, "Chillin". What you're saying is that the black guy said the white guy was a n*gger...(and that's incorrect) So in a way, the word has evolved past it's slang version of the word n*gger and has now been used as a noun for a person, regardless of race. There will always be people who don't like the word being used but it's been proliferated to the point that you can't do much about it. And just remember this, I didn't change the meaning of the word, society did. How many songs(particularly rap songs) have used the word?

The vast majority of people are of average height and this is normal.
A small portion of people are unusually short or tall, but this is common.
A tiny fraction of people are extremely short or tall, but this is rare.

Normal is what every individual and society believes himself/herself/itself to be.
Common is what every individual believes himself/herself not to be.
