Playing Itunes downloads on Droid?

Question

I have been a longtime blackberry user, since I mainly use my phone for work related purposes and email access was critical. I recently switched to the Droid Pro and I’m trying to learn how to use some of the new applications.
The Droid has an application for an Amazon MP3 download. I assume the Droid will also act as an MP3 player. I received an Itunes gift card for Christmas. Can I download Iturns songs and convert them to some type of format that will play on other MP3 players such as the Droid?
Any advice for an old guy trying to take full advantage of the phone is appreciated. If I transfer these songs to the Droid, then I assume I can still also download them and play them on an old Ipod?
