Neighbors complaining about dog barking?

So the neighbors came over today to complain that our dog howls constantly. They made a complaint when we first got our dog, and we've made a conscious effort to ensure the dog doesn't disturb them. Our dog doesn't bark only when he's excited/playing and sometimes talks back when we are feeding him. We leave him in the yard during the day when we are at work and he stays with us in the house when we are here. We've been on holidays for last 2weeks so he's been inside with us well behaved and all. They came over again tonight to complain about him making noise and that we keep him outside all the time which is a lie. Last 2 weeks he's been inside and the only time he's outside is during the day if no one is home. Apparently he's making noises at 4am to when they leave for work. This does not make sense as he is inside with us at bedtime and if he cries he needs outside. I know that a few days ago we could hear the coyotes in our neighborhood howling for a couple hours early in the morning and think they are confusing them for our dog or they just hate us... We tried explaining that to them but they don't speak English well and don't think they understood. Is there anything I can do in case they file a formal complaint or call animal control or anything?

Also the our dog can't be kept inside during the day when we aren't here because he isnt fully house trained and we are doing some construction inside and don't want him to get into anything he shouldnt

Get a lawyer to write a letter (in English and in their language) ordering them to either come up with proof of your "nuisance dog" within 7 days or face a lawsuit for harassment with a substantial compensation demand. Shouldn't cost much as a junior lawyer or legal exec could do it in 30 minutes.

If they said he howled at 4 am when you know for a fact that he was inside and you would have heard him howl, then there may be some confusion going on about where the howling is coming from. I know from experience that it can be very difficult to determine where a barking dog is if you can't see it.That said, however, if he's outside while you're at work, you have no way at all of knowing whether or not he makes noise while you're gone. You said he's outside "only while we're at work", but how long is that? If you're like most people, you're gone for 9 hours or more when you go to work. That's a substantial portion of the day. Then you said he doesn't bark, except if he's excited/playing. How often is that? From what you say, for all you know the dog is making noise anywhere up to 10 hours a day.

The only way you can be fairly sure your dog isn't being a nuisance while you're not there is to confine him to the house. If he isn't fully house trained(why not? how old is this dog?) and can't be trusted not to get into things, that's what crates and similar things are for. And if you're very sound sleepers, maybe you sleep through noise the dog makes that the neighbours hear. I have certainly been kept awake, and woken up, by a neighbour's dog when the neighbours themselves were apparently able to sleep through their own dog barking at 2 am.

It will do no good to record a dog barking without a video because you can record any barking dog, and video could be considered privacy invasion. All they have to do is call the police and if the cops hear your dog barking constantly that is all they need to have you issued a ticket. If you dog is out during the day and you are not home how do you know this dog is not a constant barker. Trust me on this as several neighbors and myself have gone thru this last year. Guy had four dogs in small fenced in yard and you couldn't be outside with out all of his dogs constantly barking and we just had enough. If it turns out your dog is constantly barking during the day, they have some collars and other things on the mkt. It is possible it is some other persons dog, but you need to find out if your dog is doing this while you are gone. I love dogs but one that constantly barks is a Nuisance.

Well, you said yourself you keep him outside when you are at work, so which is it? You don't know what he does when you aren't home because, well, you're not home. Train him to be an inside dog. Invest in a crate and crate train him. This will resolve part of the problem. If he is in the house he will be less likely to bark at everything and everyone all day long.

Good question. I'm thinking training is a solution here, but it must be easy on you and the dog while being quick and effective. That pretty much describes secrets of dog training program tht has been around for several years I think, I got it about three years ago to train my nice mutt from the pound who was about a year and a half or so. You might try it, I'm really happy with it.

You can always crate your dog inside so he is not a nuisance and is safe, however because they know you have a dog they could be blaming him for the noise they hear.............it happened to me several years ago, a neighbour complained about my dogs barking because they knew I had 5 dogs, I knew it wasn't them as my dogs are not allowed to bark in the house/garden as I am very conscience of they are my choice to own not neighbours and I told them to call me everytime they heard the dogs barking...they did and it wasn't mine....they reported me and I had the authorities come to speak to me, while they were there they heard dogs barking just over the back of my house, went to the neighbours and spoke to them...........it seemed that it was the other persons dogs were barking and because I had 5 dogs they were getting the blame..............

Get an indoor crate and make it comfy with a blanket around 3 sides and get him gradually used to that.

Both sides of the argument require reliable evidence to be collected; and it could well be Coyotes or other neighborhood dogs barking. Put up a CCTV to record what happens for a few days.

You could put up a video and record him yourselves, just to see if it's true. The neighbors may be doing something to make him bark.

Also, buy a kennel to keep him in, inside while your gone. Does he have things to play with during the day? A rawhide or something to keep him busy might help.
