if you have a rover 200 series, then the stiff clutch is an indication that it needs changing. as it wears, it fails to engage/disengage fully, a common fault with this model. you cannot adjust it, it is self adjusting. the only remedy is to change the complete clutch assembly,i.e, travel plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing. expect to pay around 450 to 650 quid for this, depending on where in the country you live.sorry couldn't give you better news.

Sounds likeyour clutch :(, it is not normal for it to move at all when you have that clutch down unless your on a hill of course, and that would explain your trouble to getting into 1st and second gear because the clutch isn't engaging all the way...maybe you can get your clutch adjusted and you can get by it or now but I would just change it outbecause you will tear that transmission up forcing it into first

Clutch is dragging, or not disengaging properly. Needs adjusting if there is any way of doing it manually. (doubtful) I'd guess there's a loss of hydraulic fluid from the system, check the reservoir under the bonnet.

Clutch need adjusting, it isn't quite disengaging properly. One thought, is there a bit of carpet stopping the pedal going all the way down?
