I think the best English teachers use lessons that help connect the novels with the students. If the students are just reading Shakespeare without delving into the characters and history of the Middle Ages, they really are not going to understand it. However, if they read, then do some hands on activities to know the characters, then connections are made.

One good lesson is for the class to break into groups of 2 or 3 students. Each is assigned a main character. One day they go to the computers with their notes. They must write out 3 thoughts/ideas of the character; 3 quotes that support those thoughts/ideas; and 3 actions the character did that again support that idea.

The next class period a male or female member of the group, depending on the character, lies on butcher paper and the outline is traces. Character name is written at the top. The 3 idea quotes are place around the head and glued on. Idea bubbles are drawn around, indicating thoughts from the head. By hands and feet, actions are glued on, with images to reinforce the actions. Quotes are place above the actions but beneath the thoughts.

The next class each group presents their character to the class for comment and critiques. Nearly always the class knows people that are similar in some ways to the characters.

If English is a double period or laptops are available in the room, this project could probably be completed in less than 90 minutes, with presentations opening the next class period.

Out of so many English teachers in my school, there are only 2 that are worth being there.

One is around 40ish, but knows how to have fun. She takes the piss out of the school because she also went to the same school when she was younger. But she teaches the material VERY well. She doesn't waste time teaching basic things we already know. She's really good and I'm sad I don't have her this year.

The second teacher is also a woman but a little younger, late 20's. She's pretty much the same as the first teacher. But she's really bubbly. She let's us have fun, we have convos with her that are nothing to do with English (movies etc). But she's strict when the standard of work isn't good enough. She tells us what's wrong and she prepares us for exams. But it's fun and relaxed in class. She also went to the same very school and she also takes the piss out of it. Tells stories of the older teachers etc. Shes really good. And the funny thing is, she got a degree in History not English. She has no degree in English, yet shes the best teacher in that subject and every student in her class does above average.

I enjoyed English so much last year with both these teachers and they helped me get better grades. I'm now taking English Literature this year. Unfortunately, the head of English department is taking the class. And let's just say, she is the most shittest teacher there is. She does fck all, she's unbelieve strict and doesn't give constructive critiscm. Everyone hates her and I'm ready to drop the subject.

It's a shame the education board hires such **** teachers that don't give a crap. Just cause they got a degree in a subject, doesn't mean they're good at teaching it to kids.

I remember in high school, in my freshman year, our teacher would have us read class books that we would have worksheets on and would have little essays on them in class and sometimes for homework. Somedays she would bring us food that would tie in with our books, so while we were reading we would eat that food that was from the story like for example we were reading about a book that had to do with chinese culture back then, she gave us tea some days and for the last chapter she gave us eggrolls! Then for other books she'd bring in some stuff that described in the book, she'd have us draw what we saw in our minds. Also for our final we were reading about Romeo and Juliet, she asked us if we wanted to do an essay about it or act it out, we picked acting out the scenes, so we had to pick groups of 4 and maybe our own stages we made, she also bought us some props for our stage, we had sword fights hats and what not. Our class mates graded us on our preformance and the teacher graded us on how well we knew our lines and our character's actions and emotions. It was fun and an awesome experience! My group got an A from both te teacher and class. :]
