Can I Get A Virus From Using Other People's Wireless Network?

I just moved and I won't have my internet, cable, and phone transferred over from my old place for like 10 days. So I hooked up my computer anyway and it said that there were a few Unsecured Wireless Networks in my range. And that is what I'm using now to be online. Hahaha.

Anyway. Can I get a virus from using the unsecured wireless network thing I'm on? I know it's a lame question but I don't know. That's why I'm asking ^^ Thank you.

Yes, it is possible. If someone using the network has a virus, it is possible if it sends a network packet that contains the virus, the computer is trained to read it, and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Also, using a network like that increases the risk of someone else on the network seeing what you do on the internet, so if you can, always use https:// when browsing the web on a public network.

    Hope this helps!

Yes, that's very likely, especially from an Unsecured Network. That happened to me a while ago. Thank God it wasn't anything big. So i tend to stay away from those. Using a Secured Network with a passcode is ALWAYS safer. Although, even secured, it can still happen.

I don't recommend using someone else's wireless connection. Its considered illegal and could get you into trouble.

While you may not get a virus in this way as long as you have a good firewall in place. However, your computer will be vulnerable on an unsecured network, and your data could be easily sniffed. Someone could get access to personal information such as credit cards or online banking in this way

    Nope

    you can get an infection

but the unsecured wireless signal won't help nor hurt you

nor infect you unless a hacker is the one who set it up to steal any info you send over the internet

Only if you download a virus

It's the same as if you were on your own line.
