Why does film look like "film"?

Film is allegedly a zillion more pixels than say HD TV but video on TV looks more like real life but film doesn't. What subtle point am I missing?

Traditionally film is shot at 24 frames per second (23.97 fps to be exact), which gives it this unreal and 'film' like motion; The effect you're probably eying is the motion of everything, in particular characters which don't move as fast as you see in real life.

If you check out soap operas, they're generally filmed at 30 fps (29.97 fps), which is a lot more real-life like; This holds true to most reality tv shows as well.

While sports are almost always filmed at 60 fps, which is very 'smooth' and is more optimal for replays as they're sometimes shown in slow motion.
