Fly Lines
•There is no designated time for replacing your line; it depends on how much you fish and the conditions of the fishing that determines the life of your fly line. It also depends on how well you maintain your line between seasons.
Well-maintained line is line that is washed in warm water and a few drops of dish detergent, then rinsed in cool water and wiped dry. There are line treatments available that will help keep your line supple and prevent cracks, and you may wish to add this step to your end-of-year maintenance. For floating lines, Rain-X is the perfect solution; just wipe it on and wipe it off. This will keep your floating line high and dry and may mean that you don't need to replace that line this year.
Periodically you should examine your fly line for small cuts or a brittle feel to the line. Those are the best indicators that it is time to replace your line. Lines with cuts certainly won't float and will not go through the water, or cast, smoothly. Replacing your line will greatly enhance your fishing experience if your lines are rough, cut or brittle.
