Question about connecting PS3/cable box/TV/Receiver?

I seemed to have fallen behind on audio/visual technology so I thought I'd post this question. I'm looking at purchasing a 5.1 surround sound receiver w/blu ray and I'm not sure how all the components would work together since the receivers I'm looking at all have only 1 HDMI port. Here's what I have now:

Cable box to TV using HDMI

PS3 to TV using HDMI

This currently uses up both available HDMI ports on the TV and I know I could connect the receiver to the PS3 using an optical cable, but how would I connect the receiver to the TV? I would like to use HDMI wherever possible so I can have HD on the TV, PS3 and the Blu Ray player/receiver but it doesn't seem possible - am I missing something??? Is there such a thing as HDMI splitters and are they reliable?

PS - I do know that the PS3 is a blu ray player, but they don't seem to offer all-in-one surround sound systems without them and for cost reasons, I'd rather not have to buy all of the components individually unless necessary.

Update:

Sorry, I should have specified initially... The cable box is HD as well.

Connect optical cable from cable box to receiver for TV channel audio.

Not sure if this would help much, but first, let us know about your cable box? Are you getting HD channels? I've got Sky Digital at the moment, and its standard def - here's my setup.

I've got a 40 inch LCD TV with two HDMI ports, component/composite, RCA and optical out connecters. I have a Blu-ray player, Xbox 360 and surround sound system, but mine's a little different - there's no seperate receiver, its built into the subwoofer.

Xbox 360 to TV by HDMI cable, I get audio and 1080p video. Unfortunately, I can't redirect the audio back out to the surround sound, my TV just isn't programmed for that.

Blu ray player to TV by HDMI cable. Same as Xbox

Sky cable box, connected by SCART cable.

Now here's the ticket. I CAN actuallly output audio but only through the Left and Right (red and white) audio connectors -sadly the subwoofer/receiver doesn't have an optical connection (wish it did). These go into the subwoofer/receiver, and I select Dolby Virtual Surround on my subwoofer's remote - this tells it to take the two channel audio signal its getting, process it, and emulate surround sound with all 5.1 speakers. Of course its not as good quality as an actual 5.1 audio track, but its close enough.

    Hope this helps!

As long as your receiver has multiple HDMI inputs, it's much more convenient to run all of your HDMI sources to the receiver, and from the receiver to your TV. That way you can let your receiver handle all the switching, instead of having to change both the television and receiver inputs when you change your source. HDMI is also capable of carrying the HD audio formats, which optical can't.
