Well sadly yes defending champion Serena Williams has pulled out of the 2011 Australian Open, almost two whole months before the tournament is set to begin.
She has not played since a piece of broken glass CUT HER FOOT at a restaurant in Hamburg in July, shortly after she won Wimbledon.

First of all she is Serena Williams,no sherena.She cut her foot on glass and cannot play tennis.She has been absent from tennis since Wimbledon in June.

Serena Williams is not playing because she knows she doesn't have the game to compete - to hang with better players.
