In the past I have tried nicotine gum, lozenges, cold turkey and non of them worked. I am proud to say that on monday I will be smoke free for 6 weeks with nicotine patches( I smoked for 20+ years). The main thing that will help you is the sincere desire to stop. The first couple of days will be rough but get through those and it will be easier. As far as the patches go, stick with the Nicorette. I tried to save money on my last box and bought the Walmart brand and they just do not work as well. I wish you the best of luck on stopping smoking. It is one of the hardest things to do but one of the best things you can do for yourself. Good luck and stay strong. You can do it!!! :)

First of all, you have to be committed to quitting. I've smoked for 15 years, quit 3 times, for several months. The problem was I wasn't committed to quitting, got drunk and would smoke *one cigarette, yeah right, like there is ever just one.
Anyway, I did this by switching to rolling tobacco, and smoking this. One time I did it by slowly transitioning to herbal smokes (mixture of sage, cinnamon, and some other herbs) and after a while I just got sick of smoking them.
Rolling tobacco doesn't have all of the chemicals the major cig companies put in their cigarettes, that really keep you hooked. Plus, when you have to take 5 minutes and make your own cigarette b/f you smoke you are forced to think twice.
Right now I am slowly lengthening the time b/t smokes. I've got it up to 4.5 hours b/t cigs now. It has beet 2 years, but this is the best method in my opinion b/c when you smoke in between it actually hurts your lungs. Plus when you decide you don't want to smoke again you'll be ready to quit for good. Good luck to you!
