Can anyone help me out with info about strapping tools?

I looked into strapping tools a little bit, but I honestly have no idea what I'm looking at. I am referring to the tool that tightens and fastens plastic straps around things like bundles of newspapers, or that TireRack uses to attach pairs of tires for shipping. They seem to range from $30 to over $2000, what's the difference? A lot of what I've seen have metal or plastic buckles to secure the straps together. What I have seen on newspapers and tires seems to either be sealed with heat, or some sort of adhesive. I am just looking for a light duty/occasional use tool that will allow me to bundle things together the same way TireRack does.

Thanks for any information.

The tools are expensive because they get abused by people that aren't necessarily going to be applying for jobs at the Jet Propulsion Lab any time soon and they put things under tremendous pressure. Cheap products will only cause frustration and mental anguish as they will break, be hard to find supplies for, are difficult to use, and possibly dangerous. The light duty applications that you're looking at use either heat or a clip system to secure the plastic strapping.

If you're not doing it for a living, but only want something you can use at home, look into stretch tape, which doesn't use tools, adhesive, or mechanical fasteners. It's basically the same stuff as food wrap and comes in thinner rolls that can be stretched around bulky or hard to tie up items. A little practice, and you can secure most anything without buying any additional tools or replacement supplies other than more stretch tape.

But if you're set on a plastic strap system, look at ULine http://uline.com/ to give yourself a baseline to compare others to. An office supply place or rental store should also carry strapping supplies and it's probably better to see them than try to read about them.

What you want is strapping a banding equipment, it's simple to use . You need the plastic strapping in a small amount, a ratchet gizmo that tightens the straps, those metal clips, and clamps, plus a crimping tool, Check this site out, they have it all, and you can probably find it at your local home center as well, but a picture is worth a thousand words as they say,

For occasionally securing a bundle of whatever, I'd suggest using twine or wire.
