How long will a butternut squash last once I've bought it?

Hi,

I bought a butternut squash from a supernarket around christmas time. It is still sitting in my kitchen. Will it be ok to use and is there any way to tell before I cut it open? How long generally can buttenut squash last for once bought? Thanks.

Update:

Thanks Ray, I was going to roast it with other vegetables to add to couscous!

Butternuts kept in ideal locations and atmosphere will last for months at a time . A nice cool dark place . Not as cold as a refrigerator and in no way heats up . Just a nice constant temperature around 50 F. The temperature of an old time root cellar .

The thing to look for on butternuts is spots ! The moment brown spots start to appear , the life of your squash has been compromised . At this time you should consider using it in a recipe . All you do is cut out the infected brown areas and the rest should be consumable .

I use an innumerable amount of butternuts . I have many more uses for them than just pies and the health benefits are incredible .

I but these fairly frequently, and find they last ages.. we are talking in terms of months. keep it moderately cool (not fridge) and not damp. It will start to show signs of going dark well before it is 'lost' - and you can still rescue a lot of it even then. What you planning on using it for?
