are Iphones really worth it?

I've kind of been wanting an iphone for ages now.

But i've resisted because it is a lot of money(here in Aus)

I don't want to go on a plan.

Is it really worth buying it outright?

or should I just forget it?

Are there any/many down sides if I buy one for pre paid?

Update:

I believe in the overseas models some of the features don't work they are $800+ what if you have issues with it?

Update 2:

I have a Samsung f480 touch at the moment

If you move around a lot & there's internet connection wherever you are, then I'd say yes, an iPhone is a good choice. If you already have a computer & only really use internet at home or school, then I'd stick with the phone you have now. You could also buy a touchscreen phone if you like that option. Good luck :)
