My son changed his laptop setting so his monitor background is all black and I can't see a thing!?

Normally, I wouldn't have trouble changing his monitor's settings, but because he set the screen to all black, I can't even see where the menu selections are even when I bring up control panel or the windows display settings. He's using Windows XP. Thanks in advance for any help!

Update:

Both of your answers would have been really useful if he had used the brightness setting, but he said he did it through the control panel.

look at the top row of keys. i think its maybe F3 and F4 has the little brightness setting on it, one for darker and one for lighter. id say he has darkened it down from there. it has to be a keyboard setting for him to be able to see to set it back.
