A how-many poll-ish type thing? (a question for everyone!)?

I'm curious. I was thinking the other day, how just about everyone I know who's into the whole supplement thing feeds their horse many supplements, not just one. Personally, i did just have my horse on one-for a while. He was on a hoof supplement, then i took him off of it and he did awful. I put him back on it, and voila, he was better again. So he stays on that. then i put him on MSM, because he's older and in pretty heavy work. It was mostly a preventative. I took him off of that, and he swelled and he wasn't moving as fluid. So he's back on that. He's also on salt, but i wouldn't really consider that a supplement. Then on top of THAT, he's on vitamin C for his heaves (which i thought was a long shot-but it's actually, surprisingly, working) and I have him on G.U.T because he's ulcer prone and he colicked recently. It's a tad ridiculous. I'm honestly not a supplement fan, and hate having him on so many, but he does worse without them. So whatever.

Anyway, if you supplement, how many do you do?

Then other "how manys":

I've noticed most english riders i know have about 8000 saddle pads, yet most westerners have one they normally ride in, then a crappy spare. maybe it's b/c western ones are more expensive..idk. But what discipline do you ride, and how many do you have?

For those who blanket, how many do you have? what are they for?

How many pairs of boots do you own? That's another thing i realized i have too many of haha.

Bits? Do you stick to one, with spares? No spares? Switch it up?

Headstalls? Reins?

Boots/support for your horse?

You can answer as many, or as few as you want :) if you have something else you have too much of, feel free to add that too!

Update:

Peanut-i totally, 100% get what you mean, which is why i hate supplementing him. I'd really rather not, but he does so well with them and so bad without them, i hate taking him off of them. His vitamin C and MSM are both straight vitamin c and straight MSM, and have the NASC seal. His GUT has NASC seal also. I'm not entirely sure about his hoof supplement, but I did weeks of extensive ingredient list research before picking that supplement..so i'm assuming i picked a good one? haha...it's been a while since i've bought it. it was a big container. but all in all, i get what you mean. I really don't like giving it all to him, but once summer comes he should only be on salt. It freaks me out giving him all that stuff..i mean, i don't even like to take medicine lol.

I don't think I want to list everything out.. and if I do... I hope my husband does not see it ;-)

~ Supplements - All have a salt and separate mineral block. Some are getting biotin and a few extra minerals added to their feed. Mainly for the foundered pony.

~ Saddle pads - 10 all purpose that the kids ponies use (mini and pony size). 2 good dressage ones. 2 working dressage ones. 5 woollen stock saddle ones.

~ Rugs/blankets - Oh this is probably my biggest over indulgence. I buy several new rugs a year, here we probably over rug compared to you guys. My tack room is 40 foot long, I have a rail the length of the shed and the rugs hang over it in size piles. Biggest rugs are 6'3 and smallest ones are 3'6.

I have cotton, light turnout rugs, medium weight turn out rugs and heavy turnout rugs. Rugs with neck attachments and hoods. Show rugs, woollen rugs and cooler rugs.

I'm guessing that there are over 100 rugs hanging in the shed and 20 are in current regular use. Eg. The girls two main ponies have a cotton on warm nights to keep mozzies off, light turn out when it rains and medium turn out for cold nights like last night (it is meant to be summer here LOL)

~ Boots - Work boots, gum boots, short riding boots x 2, long riding boots x 2.

~ Bits - Wow again heaps and heaps. All the bridles have a snaffle on them. Some french link, loose ring, eggbut (my favourite), full cheek, sweet iron, rubber.

I do have a few others, rearing bits, kimblewick, AUSTRALIAN tom thumb, bradoons, running gag, weymouth, pelham.

I don't change bits as such, but they have all been used in either competition at some point, or for various horses over the years.

~ Headstalls - One for each horse. The retired headstall/lead of good horses now deceased. Then a variety of other ones for different purposes, rope, sliding buckles, no buckles, padded, leather, synthetic. Show headstalls.

Sizes ranging from foal and mini to full size. Heaps of pony ones currently. I have some at the door in case horses get onto the road and I need them in a hurry. 1 in my car, I have found a horse on the road once and needed it. Probably 40 all up.

~ Reins/bridles - My husband completed hanging all of my bridle holders up on the wall in the new shed a year ago. A top row I can't reach without a step ladder and a bottom row that the stuff used regularly goes on. There are 30 holders in each row. He stood back and said you will never fill all of those. I'm not sure if he thought that was a challenge, but they are all now filled. Headstalls as well.

40 bridles in total and heaps of extra reins. Keeping in mind that these are work bridles, competition bridles and show bridles. I can't use a polocrosse bridle/bit showjumping and I can't muster cattle in my good show bridle. They also range in sizes from mini up to full. Heaps of pony and cob ones.

~ Horse boots - I have no idea. Bell boots, brushing boots, splint boots, open front boots etc etc etc. There would have to be 20 pairs in the cupboard. I have no horses competing that need them right now so none are used currently. All sizes and colours of course ;-)

~ helmets - I have 5 helmets and the girls have one each, but will need show helmets now.

~ Saddles - 1 dressage, 3 Aussie stock, 2 pony pads, 4 all purpose, 2 jumping. And probably 3 different length girths to suit each saddle.

I have collected it all from when I was a teenager and I now have 4 girls riding. It does not take long to collect all of this type of stuff. When most of you guys collect a life time of gear you will be amazed at how much you collect.

My completed new shed has helped A LOT, because I still had stuff in boxes from when I moved here 10 years ago. So I have doubled up on heaps of stuff in the last 10 years. But now the girls are using a good amount of it.

I would love to own a saddlery and have been offered a job in my local one several times.

A very expensive hobby in deed ;-)

Supplements: Well I don't currently feed supplements but I am going to start this summer. I'm going to start only because it's a small price to pay for good joints in the future. This is what I'm putting Casey and Sonny on:

    http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?pr...

It says, "..... effective solution to stiffness, soreness, itchy skin, brittle hooves and respiratory issues" so you could possibly get rid of the Vitamine C, hoof supplement, and the other MSM and feed this. I'd try it out because if you could save money on it, why not? Any little bit helps! =) Keep him on the G.U.T. though until the ulcer is cleared up. Ulcers come on because of stress, so he may need a calming supplement when big things are coming up like a show.

    Blankets:

I have 7 horses and probably 20 blankets, 2 shoulder guards, 2 sleezys, and 2 hoods. Sounds rediculous with the blankets, but I have ones for different weather conditions and I'm counting liners for the old ones. I never seem to use all the them in a winter season, but they're sure nice to have on hand. I don't buy all of them new either. I got about 8-10 of them used at a tack sale for a killer deal. I got the liners, pony blankets that are never used unless your breath freezes (lol, they're never used unless it's -20+ or would that be -20-? -20 and under), and I got the hoods and sleezys there too. I got super great deals on all of them though.

    Boots:

I have 5-7 but the main ones I wear are my nice ones and my barn ones in the summer. The winter ones are muck boots, then I have my older nice ones and then my paddock boots then the ones I forget about... lol!

    Bits:

Oh gosh... I'm a bit-o-holic! I have a lot of bits... I use different ones for show, training, trail (certain horses with that), and then when they progress from an egg butt, to a D ring, to an Offset, and anything else in there that I think could do them some good. I have lots of spares, needless to say!

    Headstalls & Reins:

I have a headstall for every horse, then some back ups and then the english bridle.

I have a full set of Professional Choice SMB that I never use, My favorite pair of Turqoise Classic Equine Legacy in a full set that I always use, a front set of CE Legacy orange, xs pair of splint boots, and 2 regular horse size splint boots. I usually use them for on the trail.

    Halters:

I have too many halters... 1 nylon for every horse, a nice nylon, a rope halter, multiple back ups, some horses have extra nice halters, then I have 4 show halters.

    Saddle Pads:

I don't have over-excessive amounts of saddle pads (I'm western though lol) but I'm just trying to find "the" saddle pad. I'm getting it in August when I go see CA at a tour though. :D

    Hope this helps! =)

Supplements... I myself would rather not feed any. But, at the moment my horse is on two. He cannot hold weight well especially in winter, so I have him on a digestive aid - Lysine, hopefully when he picks up weight I will take him off that. I also have him on Fluid Flex because he is older so gets stiff pretty easy and he has an old joint injury which locks up every now and then. So it mainly to keep him from getting super stiff he can't be worked anymore.

Saddle pads. Do NOT get me started lol. I ride English and I do fall into the category of having WAY too many pads. I LOVE colors. Anything you can buy in different colors I want lol and that is the only reason. I like making my horse "match" with bright pads/boots etc. It's an addiction that costs me too much money. -- Same for tendon boots. For only owning one horse I think I have 8 matching pads and boots :S

I never blanketed before, but just recently got one for my guy because again, he is older and in this really bad cold he stiffens up pretty bad. He just has one and hopefully I can resist on buying more, especially because he doesn't need it.

Everything else I have one of. Though, I do hope to switch his bit here in the next couple of months to something a bit more gentle. Oh yeah, and buy another bridle. One that matches his Saddle and girth ;) lol.

Supplements: none, other than mineral salt blocks

Saddle Pads (English): Probably about 5 each of horse and pony size that are in the regular rotation. I've got others that don't get used for one reason or another.

Blankets: I have one turnout blanket for each of my 4 horses. They only get used if it's below about 10 degrees (F) out and/or my mare is shivering. I also have a wool cooler that is about 30 years old, and an anti-sweat sheet. They rarely get used.

Boots: 1 pair of tall boots, 1 pair of paddock boots, 1 pair winter paddock boots, several pairs of work boots.

Bits: Each horse has one bit which is used all the time. I have probably 5 other bits around the house.

Same with the bridles and reins: each horse has one that's used all the time, but I've got a few spares around. The two ponies switch from regular reins to games reins when they are doing mounted games.

Horse Boots: My mare has galloping boots and bell boots, used occasionally, and the small pony has boots to be used for jumping/X-C, but mostly because they look so darn cute on him.

The thing I currently have too many of is saddles. I have a leadline saddle my son has long outgrown, my son's first saddle that doesn't fit his second pony, and one that's broken, and probably not fixable (but I'm keeping it around because I haven't found out for sure). I don't particularly like the saddle I got to replace the broken one, so would either like to fix the broken one or get another one and sell it. Before having my son, I had the same 2 saddles for about 20 years (the broken one and a dressage saddle). Now we've got 7 saddles.

    Supplements

Lets count. So... probiotics, BL (joint supplement) Selenium, equine recovery and then platinum performance. So thats 5. Keeper just gets platinum.

I also work at a different barn. There, most of the horses get Platinum plus one or two other supplements. Some get nothing. Fairy gets Platinum, ABC+, Evitex, and ABF. Cassidy gets Smart flex, bute and a smart pak to help avoid ulcers since she's on bute for life. She also gets cough free every now and again.

    Saddle Pads

I ride english and I literally can't count them all. I inherited them from a friend, so I have all of her's which have repeats (same color) so its hard to count them. Plus they are all in different trunks so even harder. Plus I don't use any of the show pads right now since they are white.... I'm guessing 20-ish?

    Blankets

Again, this is inherited from a friend (her horse, I'm just looking after him and free leasing). Nappy has 2+ sheets (keep finding more but he has 1 primary). Then he has 2 light weights, 1 medium and 1 heavy. They are all color coded which is a lifesaver because Keeper has the same blankets. Now we can just say "throw on the purples" and everyone knows that they both need their heavy weights. Plus Nappy has 2 flysheets because he's a wimp. Oh I forgot about coolers! I have 4 of those (2 per horse)

Nappy gets blanketed because he's a TB and thin skinned. Keeper gets blanketed because he has cuchings and if we didn't he'd have literally 8 inches of hair....

    Boots:

I have 1 pair that I use. There is a whole box entirely stuffed full of boots and another full of polos in the tack room though. probably 8 pairs? The other girl who rode Nappy did really heavy eventing and has a LOT of stuff. it piles up

    Bits

I use his dressage bit , but he has a jumping bit and a XC bit. Then there are the extras. again, its a rack

    Boots

I have one pair. I buy the cheap crappy ones so they break before i get a second pair....

    reins

2 pairs, plus 3 more that are actually on the bridles. I think I need another pair. Or not NEED but want. a nice leather pair, all mine are web....

wow, we have a lot of stuff. its kind of bad since i don't use ANY of it.... i should start!

I ride western, and I only ride my friends horse, so I'll answer by her horses

    No supplements

I ride western and only have 2 pads for 3 horses. One is 32 and retired. So really 2 pads for 2 horses.

    No blankets.

I have 2 pairs of riding boots. A pair of Fatbabys I got from a friend before I started riding. And probably 3 pairs of waterproof warm insulated hunting boots, and 2 or 3 pairs of hiking boots.

Umm... She has 3 bits that I know of. Two are in Bridles and the other was just taken out of her mares bridle so she could teach her to neck rein. We don't switch bits around.

Two head stalls and quite a few sets of reins. "my" gelding is hard on reins, so a lot are broken.

Um maybe two sets of boots but I forgot what kind they were or what they were used for.

We have 3 rope hatlers for the 3 horses.

We have a ton of treats. http://www.organizeit.com/plasticbins.asp We have a tub about that size full of horse treats. Those are necessity though :P

Supplement: I do not currently feed a supplement.

Saddle Pads: 3 dressage pads, 4 jumpers 1 western pad, 1 western blanket(I think)

Blankets: 6 (wool cooler, fleece layer, sheet, rain sheet, 2 medium weights, heavyweight(removable hood))

Boots: 1 paddock boot, 1 field boot

Bits: No idea. I have quite the collection, but I usually keep the loose-ring french-link snaffles on.

Bridles: 3 havanas, 1 dressage, 1 western headstall/reins. 3 extra sets of reins (different textures)

Boots: 2 pairs SMBs, Many polos, 1 pair gallop boots.

Anyway, if you supplement, how many do you do? I don't use any.

But what discipline do you ride, and how many do you have? I ride both english and western. Don't show much for either. Western I have 4 pads. English I have 3. lol So more western then english for me.

For those who blanket, how many do you have? what are they for? Have a fly/sunsheet for my paint cause he has really sensitive skin. And 1 thick waterproof winter sheet for which ever horse needs it (one gets sick or something) and 2 coolers.

How many pairs of boots do you own? 2 normal cowboy boots, 1 english pair, and 1 english pair show boots. Plus rubber boots for wading thru mud to feed horses in the winter.

Bits? Do you stick to one, with spares? No spares? Switch it up? Way too many. lol I'm obcessed with buying bits, but only use a french link O-ring for my gelding and a D-ring on my mare and a full cheek on my pony. But all in all I have about 30 different bits, both curbs and snaffles. I get a new one I think looks cool and try it on my gelding (he is so patient with me :D) just to see the action it has, then it goes in a box in my bedroom. lol

Headstalls? Reins? Way too many too. Have 4 english bridles (one for each horse and a spare) and 6 western headstalls (one for each horse plus several extras. lol) Only have 2 sets of western reins, english ones with bridles.

Boots/support for your horse? Splint boots for the 2 big horses, but I almost never put them on them. A few extra tendon boots and a few pairs of bell boots.

    No supplements.

Western, and haha, 1 good blanket and a crappy spare. XD

1 blanket, and it's a winter one, because he's outside all the time.

    3 pairs of boots,

I've got a small bucket full of spare snaffles of various kinds, but I usually just stick to a snaffle with a shank.

A standard western bridle, with 4 spares.

2 pairs of reins, both split, but I use just one pair. Until it dies.

    No boots.

I have too much leather. I was looking for a back cinch a while ago, and I found about 17 pieces of leather, ranging from 1-6 feet. Nothing fancy, just strips of leather.

  • 1 decade ago

Supplements: I don't own a horse, but the horse I lease gets a mineral block and salt block (don't know if those count, but I'll put it down), biotin for his hooves and mane and tail, in the spring-summer paprika to stop his coat from bleaching, in the summer garlic to keep the flies away (a little does the trick). We stick to natural supplements. I don't mind putting supplements in his food if it keeps him healthy and happy.

Saddle blankets: (english) 2 right now, I'll probably get more though because one of them is dying. You really never can have enough.

That's really all I own, but the owners have about 15 of everything on your list :)
