I don't know where you buy it in the USA because I live in the UK. But I can tell you what it is. It's a kind of cream, it tastes like yogurt. I personally use it in past and/or desserts. I don't know why they call it fromage frais, I would call it yogurt!

It translates to fresh cheese...also called fromage blanc, meaning white cheese. It is essentially a yogurt like cheese product often used as a dessert with berries or honey. Unless you find a specialty store of some sort, your best bet is to substitute low-fat cream cheese...not ideal though.
