Searious question about the Bonanza show please please please answer?

Okay so if I'm not mistaken (and correct me if I am) When Pernell Roberts (The man who played Adam Cartwright) left the show, they let on that he was still there by having the other characters mention him saying things like 'while your brother is gone' and sayings somewhat similar to that, to just make it seem that Adam was away and not actually gone correct? ( I repeate correct me if I am wrong).

But my question is, when Dan Blocker died (The man who played Hoss Cartwright) Did thay do the same thing that they did with Adam to just make it seem that he was away? Or did they make an episode where Hoss died? I know that Dan could not be there to film this obviously, but did Ben and Joe ever get word that Hoss died or was killed? Or did they (as I said) just carry on like Hoss had just left for a while?

I really want an answer from some one who knows for sure. Thank you all.

Update:

I know that they made it seem as though Adam was just gone for a while incase Pernell came back. But even though Dan could'nt come back, letting it seem like Hoss was just gone for a while just seems to me like a way better ideah. It probably would have made fans feel a lot happier. I know it would have made me a lot happier.

Sorry I know I cant go back in time to change the script to just make Hoss be on vacation or something like that, but I just had to rant.

With Pernell Roberts, they could pretend his character was away, to leave an opening in case Pernell wanted to return to the show later. When Dan Blocker died, there was no such option so the script called for Hoss to be killed suddenly. I think (although not certain) that Hoss was killed when he fell off his horse while rounding up some cattle.

According to Wikipedia, they chose to mention that Hoss had died. He passed away in May 1972 and the show ended it's long run in January 1973.
