What is with these current teenagers?
15 years ago, I offered $5 a stall, to have several stalls shoveled out.
I had 15 teens show up the next morning wanting the job.
This last September, I offered $10 a stall, for same work.
I had ONE show up, and he took 3 cellphone calls while being interviewed for the job, without so much as an excuse me.
NOTE: He DID NOT get the job either. (I wound up doing it myself.)
They were 5, 10' x 12' horse stalls, and I only needed it shoveled out into the aisle where I could pick it up with the tractor bucket.
It took ME, 66 and disabled, less than 1 hour a stall!

Kids now a days want it all while doing the minimum work required. There is no work ethic now a days. $10.00 a stall isn't bad at all...that's 50 bucks a day I know adults that would work for that...and as a previous contributor said something about todays economy...yes todays economy sucks, so you take what you can get. You said it took less than an hour to do a stall...lets say it took 45 minutes a stall..that equals 3 hours 45 minutes for $50.00...that equals $13.33+/hr depending on how fast they work. What is wrong with that, especially for a teenager...and if they did a good job, who knows they could be asked to come back and help some more around the farm.

Yeah in my state the economy is terrible and ADULTS would have probably been lining up. Most people [without degrees] make about $7 an hour.
And I don't know where people live that gas is $3 a gallon, here it's more than $4.
I think it's just that teens don't want to work ANY job that requires any sort of labour at all, since they can just ask their parents for money. Next time maybe just ask a teenager or young adult living in your neighbourhood if they'd kindly help you out, that way you don't have to go out interviewing teens either. : )

That actually sounds like a pretty fair job. Way more the minimum wage an hour. Raise it a couple dollars and see what happens. Try advertising a little better. I don't think people understand that pay is way over most minimum wages in the US.
Granted that as stall takes about 30-45 minutes and you have 10 stalls you could make 100 dollars a day. Which is HIGLY above most wages.

It should be obvious from the answers you've gotten that kids are getting sufficient monies without working. That usually means they are getting it from their parents. Not like the days when we were given a very SMALL allowance, and a really BIG DOSE of work ethic.
You might try offering future work to someone at a day-work center or even to someone at a homeless shelter. It might then be easier to find someone who isn't afraid of a good day's work for a good day's pay.

Remember, 15 years ago things were cheaper. 5 dollars could fill up a gas tank about half way. (My parents said gas prices were about $1.20 a gallon when I was born.)
Now it's about $3 per gallon.
And child labor laws were possibly different.
And to the person who said $5 dollars doesn't pay the bills- Neither do most 15 year olds.

15 years ago gas was $1.05, today it's $3.12
Minimum wage was $3.25? today it's $7.55?
You needed to offer $12-$15 to equal the $5 of back then.

Do you really expect teens to work for $10 with today's economy?

They think they are entitled to everything and above doing such work. They aren't to blame - they're parents are! It's sad!
