I want to be a writer of novels, screenplays, and eventually a director. Do you think this is a good plan?

For these issues I intend to attend the University of Houston, triple (!) majoring in Media Production, Philosophy, and English.

Do you think this is a good plan to succedd in these areas?

I think Houston is a big city, so it would give me many opportunites to flourish in these sects. Also, it is a University I can get into without paying out of state tuition.

In a word, no, not a good plan.

Directing is very different from screenwriting, with almost no overlapping skills. Screenwriting and fiction writing have overlaps in the skills, but they're very different from one another. It's a rare novelist who can successfully adapt his own work for the screen.

Philosophy won't help you with any of those goals, although it's a fascinating field. (Our daughter's getting her PhD in it.) English will prove surprisingly little help in reaching the two writing goals, although it can shore up weak writing skills if you have that problem.

If I were you, I'd forget Philosophy (and the rigors of getting enough credits for the triple major) and double major in Media Production and History--which is crammed with good stories.

Have you tried writing your own stuff? You need to make sure it's what you want to do because a triple major requires a lot of work.

I don't think you will need philosophy as much. Have you talked to any careers advisor type people? If you are still at school speak to someone there. Also contact the university and tell them what you want to do and ask them what you will need to do that.

Doing a diploma or something of teaching is a good idea too at the end of it as the area you want to go into is not necessarily going to bring you a stable income, so if you teach English/Media/other similar areas as well then you will be able to get a stable job while you write, even if it's just part time.
