Because they learn almost everything they know from their surroundings.

Please try to imagine a very small island, cut off from the rest of the world (unexplored, undiscovered or so..), but inhabited by a small group of people. Good natural vegetation, and cows/buffaloes main source of food. Now, a kid who is born and brought up there, is asked by a supernatural power "Ask one wish, anything you like, it will be granted/it will happen"... That kid will ask for a large healthy buffalo or cow, or many cows etc. But he cannot ask for latest model motor car! He may not ask for a mobile, TV, computer laptop, or a good well placed fancy job!

The desires are influenced by input data. And unfulfilled desires decide the quality of life, contentment, happiness etc.
