Use either Bit Defender or Kaspersky. They are the top two antivirus programs in software world.

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn't remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It's strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It's tough to say which is best.

Kaspersky doesn't require high performance capabilities such as RAM and processing speed for example Norton requires more than 1GB RAM to work effectively. Kaspersky is reliably fast, automatically updates (user defined), highly secure with an impressive range of virus and threat definitions and resources and most of all it is simple to use.

    Kaspersky 8-9/10

I've used them all. Norton is no longer the system hog it used to be, but for now, I'd recommend Avast! free:

Any AV with multiple protection layers is going to put a drag on your resources - how much depends on your build.

I visit a lot of questionable sites and Avast! is as good as it gets and updates constantly.

It's free and, if you don't like it they provide an uninstaller so you can try another.

You might also want to check out a light, free anti-malware solution with PCTools Threatfire to accompany your AV program:

i am currently using free avast anti virus and it works great! norton is great anti virus too but whenever it starts to scan it slows down your computer speed, thats the disadvantage of norton and it consume a lot space in your hd. but if you are looking for a better anti virus try bitdefender (internet security or total security) it is expensive but its worth it.

A friend of mine ages ago told me to use ESET (NOD32) as it does deep scans and it wont effect the computer in anyway (think it scans when the computer goes idle and if you move your mouse it pauses i think cant remember) it auto updates and they are very small some even being just 3kb big.

    Well...I'd done using paid antivirus.

I would like to recommend free antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essential or Avast. Combine this with Antimalwarebytes ( also free).

You can also add Spybot its also free.

make sure they are updated before you scan your unit.

I've had the best results with Kaspersky.

Avoid Norton: it's pretty useless against trojan horse attacks.

I have Bitdefender Internet Security installed on my computer and I'm really satisfied with it. I'am using the Internet every day, chat with friends, send emails, download files and my computer is still clean.

I recommend you this software, try it and see the results.
