there was such a thing as a 8 stroke, actually called a hit and miss, where it was your usual 4 stroke but it only fired every other revolution, there were several designs, but basically the magic was done in the valve train and ignition system, and the help of a rather large and heavy flywheel, the more complex ones would open the exhaust valve instead of the intake valve every other revolution, thus cutting the fuel consumption in half in theory, mostly used in industrial applications where high torque and low RPM were desirable. there dinosaurs these days and can be seen in museums and private collections.

They are not production engines but a patent was filed in 2009

    The normal 4 strokes

    1) Suck

    2) Squeeze

    3) Bang

    4) Blow

    Then the extra four are

    5)exhaust is compressed again

6)water is injected and turns to steam

7)steam expands pushing down the piston

8)steam/exhaust is expelled from the cylinder

Engines are either 2 or 4 strokes.

There were 8 stroke engines built between the wars. The camshaft turned at 1/4 the speed of the crankshaft. Efficiency wasn't all that great but you had 2 output shafts, crank & cam. One turned at 1000 rpm to drive the separator & the 250 rpm drove the vacuum pump in a dairy shed. Monitor was one of the brand names

You mean an 8 cylinder engine, you either have 2 strokes compression/power exhaust/intake, or 4 strokes intake, compression, power, exhaust. Remember suck, squeeze, bang, blow.

    u only have a 2 stroke and 4 stroke

the 2 stroke has its exhaust intake on the same stroke and the compression and power on one stroke

the 4 stroke has intake (down) compression (up) power (down) exhaust(up)

Do you mean how many strokes in an 8 cylinder engine? The answer would be 4 strokes.

    good luck........

8 stroke engines are not use in motor vehicles. they are old pumping engines
