Question about emergency brake on car....?

While I am driving my car & my emergency brake is off the brake light on my dash is still on. Does anyone know why or how I can turn it off? Am I hurting my car by still driving it. It seems to drive as if it is off, but I am confused about the light. Advice?

Update:

Also, I kind of flickers off and on so could it still be more than just an emergency brake problem?

Either the emergency brake switch is malfunctioning or there is a problem with your vehicle brake system - low brake fluid for example.

If the "brake light" you are referring to is parking light indicator that says "Parking Brake" then it could be an adjustment on the switch attached to the parking brake.

KUDOS for using your parking brake. It is the ONLY safe and reliable insurance that the vehicle is safe when parked. Every year hundreds are killed and thousands injured from "Roll-a-ways" where the transmission interlock or prawl fail, ( and there have been millions of recalls of Chrysler and Ford products, among others) The many transmission mechanics are such, that , you can never be sure if and when they will fail. Most vehicles are front wheel drive so - when you engage the parking brake, the rear will wheels will hold even if the front wheel transmission lock fails or the vehicle is bumped - and they do and will. In the City where I live - a small child and a young driver died the same day, because the parking was not engaged. Each vehicles interlock failed and ran over them - killing them

Most of those failing to engage the parking brake are just pure lazy - just the pull of a lever or the pressing of a pedal. Some Companies will terminate an employee for failure to apply a parking brake in Company vehicles. EVERY vehicle ever built had some type of parking/emergency brake AND they would not be there if it is not important.

If a manufacturer could save $5 per vehicle - and built a million vehicles, ($5,000,000) don't you think they would eliminate them?

    STOP DRIVING NOW!!!

that is NOT just he e-brake light....but also the BRAKE light....meaning it comes on when something is WRONG with ur braking system....which means u need to get it checked by a shop immediately.....

basically something in ur brake system has gone bad to the point where the light has come on ....which means u may or may NOT have brakes the next time u press the pedal....

Source(s): get ur brakes fixed immediately....do not pass go do not collect 200.......go directly to a mechanic....

THe light is on a small switch that tells you the break is on. First pull up on the break while pulling on the release. If it is between the seat, be shure it is all the way down.

On some cars this light also means it is time for breaks, as it has a censer that tell you it is time for breaks.

check your brake fluid level, could be low.

if it is low, take it to a shop ASAP to find out why some leaked out.

Don't ever put off fixing brake problems

stop using that obsolete hand brake/emergency brakes went out when they started hydraulic brakes in the 30s/check the fluid level in master cylinder and stop using that piece of junk/dont know why they still have them/havent used one in 30+ years/they stick on
