People are often fooled by the belief that Floyd Patterson is the fastest of all heavyweights. He matched ALI's speed in some ways. Patterson was faster on the inside while ALI had more range on the outside. However, Patterson is a bit overrated in all other ways.

Patterson didn't have the foot work to match his speed. He could remain a step ahead of stationary Johannson. However, there is NO WAY he's getting away from Joe Frazier. Another misconception is that Frazier was a slow knockout artist. . . He was neither.

What Frazier was is THE greatest "pressure" fighter the heavyweight division has ever seen. NOT Dempsey, NOT Marciano, NOT Tyson. All have SOME similarities to Frazier but NONE of them applied the pressure that Joe did. All might even have an edge in power. That's not what gets Patterson here.

This would be very similar to what Tyson-Spinks would have been, had Spinks not frozen from fear. On paper, there was still no way Spinks could win. He lacked the footwork to escape. He lacked the power to keep Tyson at bay, he lacked the durability to take Tyson's punches.

In this case, Patterson is Spinks and the only thing that keeps him around a little longer than Spinks is the fact that he would actually move, where Spinks didn't. Still, there would be no place for Patterson to hide. Frazier would have NO trouble tracking him down. Though Frazier is not the power hitter, in the mold of Foreman or Tyson, he had more than enough to dent Patterson's welterweight chin.

    Frazier by KO in 4

  • Patterson would lose by KO.

Patterson was a smallish heavyweight, but with probably the fastest hands ever seen in the heavyweight division, and with crunching power. Look at how devastating his KO's are. And this is from a guy who used to be a middleweight.

Frazier would probably walk Patterson down and flatten him repeatedly with his devastating left hook. Patterson would be hard pressed to hurt Frazier, who was always coming forward and built like a tree trunk. Patterson's chin wasn't the best, as he went down well over 20 times in his career, and if Frazier landed on Patterson's chin just once, it's over for him.

Frazier would knock Patterson out, it would not go to the score cards.

Patterson ruled the heavyweights by winning the tournament when Marciano retired, and then survived by fighting amateurs and lower ranked fighters, and ducking the tough fights.

When he was forced to fight Liston he was guaranteed a rematch and 70% of the purse as the challenger.

The best think I liked about Ali was he gave all the contenders a chance, and some had waited more than 10 years because Patterson would not fight them.

Both had two of the best left hooks in boxing. Both are underrated. I would have to pick joe because of floyds weak chin
