Is my hedgehog not tame or nervous?

I recently got a pet hedgehog from a breeder. He is still a baby and seemed very sweet at the breeders house. When we got home we took him out so he could see his new home and he wouldn't come out of a ball. He was not very friendly so we thought he was nervous. The next day we took him out and he did the same thing except this time he hissed. Does he miss the siblings that he was with at the breeders? Is he just unfriendly and if so how can i tame him. Even though he hissed and goes into a ball i put him on my lap and at least 2 times a day he comes out and walks around on me. Will he become more friendly in time or will he stay the same?

He needs time to get adjusted to his new home. Let him get accostomed to his new home and he will be more playful in time. As a side note, a GREAT bonding time activity with your heggy is bath time...they LOVE baths! Just put about enough warm water (NOT HOT!!!) in your tub to come up to his belly (so he wont drown). My heggy LOVED LOVED LOVED bath time! he would walk through the whole tub and just live it up! Just make sure you dry him off realy good so he doesnt get sick! Also, they LOVE meal worms as a treat (can get at most bait shops).

  • First, what you are experiencing is completely normal. Hedgehogs need time to acclimate to their new home and surroundings and sometimes this can take a few days, or even a few weeks. Don't be discouraged as he will come around. One thing you can try is to put a t-shirt in his cage that has not been washed in a few days. This will give him something to burrow in and also will get him used to your scent, which is very important. Next, take him out 15-30 minutes every day, and just sit him in your lap with a fleece blanket or something else. Don't pick him up, just let him sit there and do his own thing. The more he is handled, the friendlier he will get. You can also try treats, but it is best if you wait until he is 12 weeks to avoid upset stomachs. Some hedgehogs also like to play in the water, but again, wait until he is at least 3 months old or later.

    Hope this helps

I completly agree with "cookies and cream is amazing" (weird name) anyway, he is frightened. Don't bother him for 3 days, simply feed him ect.

He's just scared. Leave him alone for a few day and then try holding him.
