Does any one have advise about encaustic painting on firied ceramics?
I have a friend thinking about trying encaustic painting on fired ceramics.
This maybe nice for some of my figurative pieces.
I would be applying this to fired ceramics - I would like to think about firing to cone 1 instead of the normal cone 6 so the ceramic clay would still be porous.
I would like to keep this as nontoxic as possible
I do have a last refuge of working in a spray booth vented to the outside.
I meant.that I could work in the spray both to suck the fumes outside
The studio is to the point of paranoid about toxic chemicals and smells

I don't have direct experience with this technique, but I do know people are using it on clay. In the past I have known many clay artists that used butchers wax on pit-fired pots to finish them and give them a satiny finish. This was usually done on top of a piece with terra sigillata. These pieces usually did not get fired beyond cone 06.
Your question peaked my interest so I did some research and this is what I found:
ClayArt had two interesting threads (link #3 and #4) found through a search. #3 is a discussion of various techniques that might interest you. #4 is about a workshop that Ceil Sturdevant taught including "an encaustic wax on clay demo." Link #5 is her website and contact info -- perhaps she can answer more questions.
If you are doing this, I agree the spray booth is a good idea as well as getting yourself a mask w/ Hepa filters for fumes.
Good luck. I wish I could fund more, and if you find out any more you can always contact me.

I think you need to check out encaustic more. I believe it is pigment in wax and thus spraying is not possible. If you just mean you are going to use it as a vent, then excuse me.
