Are there any other explanations for ketoacidosis other than diabetes?
My son is 19 months old and has had sweet smelling breath for at least 6 months now. I just found that this can be ketoacidosis from diabetes. I was wondering if the sweet breath can be caused by something else. I haven't taken him to the doctor for this because I didn't realize it could be something so serious until I got curious as to what could cause it and found that it may be diabetes. So just wondering if anyone knows of any other causes for sweet smelling breath.

Acetone odor in the breath is not the same thing as having ketoacidosis. A person can expel acetones or ketones in their breath without having ketoacidosis. The principal cause of acetone/ketone breath is diabetes, but many times infants have this smell without diabetes. I have never seen an explanation for this but it could possibly have something to do with the way infants metabolize fats. Anyhow, he should have his blood checked ASAP, and hopefully his blood glucose will be normal in spite of the breath odor.
